What's bet between nVidia and ATI has allways been alternating. 2-3 years ago when I was using the newsservers the ATI cards had an advantage when it came to the StarDock application because the ATI drivers had better perpixel support. It made a perticulary difference with WindowsFX and transitions. Not sure how the situation is now though. I still have an ATI card on my desktop and a nVidia card on my laptop. Both works fine. For desktop customazation though. For gaming the laptop isn't powerful enough.
I don't think it matters if you go for ATI or nVidia. Either way you will get a good graphics card.

I have a Nvidia Geforce 6800GT and i love it never had any problems and it kicks ass
